Acquired Brain Injury vs. Traumatic Brain Injury

A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is more commonly referred to as a concussion. Traumatic brain injuries are caused by forces (i.e.trauma) that affect the function of the brain. Most TBIs are caused by high-impact incidents, such as falls or car accidents.

Conversely, acquired brain injuries are caused by internal health complications that disrupt brain function. For example, brain injuries can be caused by strokes, tumors, aneurysms, viruses and diseases, toxic exposure, or any issue that limits the brain’s oxygen supply. Acquired brain injuries are also called “non-traumatic brain injuries,” because they result from such internal factors rather than the external trauma that can cause TBI.

Brain Injury Symptoms

Many people who sustain brain damage and other types of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) experience a lessened quality of life. They may be unable to work, and they may require special accommodations. Others may experience relatively "minor" changes that are not immediately recognized by others.

It is important to receive treatment for a brain injury as soon as possible. Because most symptoms of brain injuries are not visible, and because symptoms may not appear at all for days or weeks, prompt medical attention is essential. Receiving treatment right away will ensure your brain injury does not progress or go unaddressed for a substantial period of time.

Our firm strives to understand the full implication of your injury and how your life is affected by the following:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Cognitive loss
  • Headaches
  • Loss of balance
  • Loss of abilities

  • Personality changes

Common Causes of Brain Injuries

Falls are the most common cause of brain injuries. According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 28% of traumatic brain injuries are caused by falls. Motor vehicle accidents account for 20% of TBI cases and “being hit by or colliding with an object” accounts for 19% of cases. Eleven percent of brain injuries are caused by assaults. Other causes were cited in 12% of cases.
